For many of us apartment-dwellers, storage space is almost always at a desperate minimum. Whether it’s negative closet space or a studio where you’ve got everything in one room, here are a few tips to help you rethink your space and rework your stuff:

Conduct a space survey

A good way to start is to look first for hidden space you didn’t know you had. Now, most likely you won’t have any trap doors leading to unlimited storage space, but take an objective look. Spaces between things, behind things, above and below–all it takes is a little thinking along the “Am I utilizing the space I have correctly” lines and you’ll be surprised in what you might uncover.

Practical “decoration”

An easy shelving system can be created by putting up shelves above doors and windows. Use some for books, some for nick-necks–if you keep them neat, they’ll serve as decoration and something nice to look at. This is an easy solution for all sorts of extra room to stash that stuff you don’t need on a daily basis, but still want to have around.

Suitcase stack

It might be hard to visualize, but a collection of vintage suitcases stacked on top of each other makes a great storage center. You can usually find these fairly cheaply at yard sales. Fill ‘em up and stack them (lying down) with the largest on the bottom and the rest on top in descending size order. Prop some photos on the top and you’ve got yourself a great little stand that’s creative and useful.

Smaller than a breadbox

Another good yard sale idea is old breadboxes. If you shop around, you can find these beauties for $5-15. Get a collection in the kitchen and store the wine glasses in one, the beer mugs in another–like the suitcases they stack and are a fun way to spruce up the kitchen.

Think fold down

If you haven’t got room for a kitchen table, how about one that folds down from the wall? When you need it, just pull it up, prop it, and you’re set to dine. When it’s not in use, you’ve got that much more room to move. No one really likes to eat every meal on the couch

Under the bed is a gold mine

Make the best of the space under your bed. If you’ve got enough closet space for your clothes, but a mini kitchen, there’s nothing wrong with storing the extra pots and pans under here, or even canned goods. Purchase some cardboard or plastic boxes and you’re set to go. Don’t let this become the black hole–use it!

Apartment:

For many apartment dwellers, moving from place to place is as routine as doing the taxes. But no matter how often you have moved in your life, finding an apartment can be a difficult task, especially if you are changing cities or parts of the country. Not only that, but it is a major decision – this is the place you will spend the bulk of your time for at least the next year, and you don’t want to settle for something you don’t love just because you didn’t know how to look. With the right strategy, though, it is possible to find a perfect apartment no matter the situation.

About them:

Before you even begin to look at apartments, it is wise to sit down and plan out exactly what you are looking for. What would be your ideal apartment? Are you the type who loves cozy, vintage places in an older building, or do you like the idea of sleek, modern high-rises with all the amenities? What about the neighborhood? Think about the apartments you’ve had in the past. What did you like about them? Hate about them? Jot these things down. This will help you get an idea of what sort of place you want to see even before you begin apartment hunting.

Real estate agency:

There are several ways to locate apartments for rent. The most prevalent – though not necessarily the most effective – way of doing this is to go to an apartment rental or real estate agency. The advantage of these agencies is that they maintain listings of all the apartments they are contracted to rent or manage, and can show you a large number of apartments in a short amount of time. This is great for people who don’t have the time or energy to search for apartments on their own, or are looking for more generic, professionally managed apartment complexes. There are a few disadvantages to agencies though – one is that some of them charge a so-called “finder’s-fee” for locating the apartment for you. In some cities this can be the equivalent of a month’s rent, a pretty hefty price tag for a convenience. A second disadvantage is oftentimes gems of apartments don’t get listed with realtors, especially if the apartment is in a house or group of flats owned by an individual landlord. So, although it may be to your advantage to see what realtors have to offer, you should explore other options as well.

Ways to find an apartment:

One of the easiest ways to find an apartment is to look through the local and online classifieds. This requires more work on your part, but can yield some terrific finds. Many times owners don’t want to pay a management or rental company to show their apartment, and simply place ads in the newspaper. Of course, nearly everybody makes their apartment sound perfect, but if you have the time – and you should make the time, since this is going to be where you live – it is worth calling up these ads and making appointments to see what they have to offer. Remember, if you know what you’re looking for, you can often know within a few minutes if the place is not right for you.
